a sheet of deckle-edged paper (Toffee)
You read the sheet of deckle-edged paper:
Written in black ink:
New Year's Eve:
A Celebration Through Time

Looking back over the new years,
That have past as death draws near,
What I do know is written here.
Strange how life changes, I'm sincere.

With parents, have sips of drink.
Soon, clean my teeth in the sink.
Magical fireworks booming.
Worry about school coming.

Drinks at the Flaming Cabbage -
Looking for love but not marriage.
Shout and joke with lots of friends.
Promise to know them til the end.

Working now, worried about bills.
Shame - gone are most of the thrills.
Quiet drink, friends, only a few.
Smile, trying not to be blue.

Wrinkles mark my face, it's cold.
Feel my age and aches, grown old.
Look through the window at Morpork.
Snuggled, watching the fireworks.

Life is a circle like the year beginning and ending.
When you are young, it often, somehow, seems neverending.
I know in a way it is, with some fading, some ascending.
Celebrate a Happy New Year, whereever your heading.
